The Saturday morning sky was gray as a huge Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter made its landing approach in Grandview, Missouri. The lower parking lot at Gail's Harley-Davidsonwas the landing zone. The occasion for this special visit was Gail’s 7th Annual 9-11 Tribute Rally and Ride. It was a time to remember those who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It was also a time for bikers and others to join in demonstrating their appreciation for military personnel (past and present), law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other emergency services personnel. They stand ready to risk everything in the service of their country and the American public, always working to preserve our well-being and our freedom.

American flags provided by the Patriot Guard Riders surrounded Gail’s parking lot. The area in front of the dealership was packed with vendor displays and fun attractions such as a moonwalk for the kids. A heavy military truck and humvee were on display. Live bands on hand to rock the crowd included KC/DC, a talented AC/DC tribute group and Rock Show. Everyone had the opportunity to admire some sweet street rods belonging to members of the 71 Cruisers car club.

Prior to the ride’s 4:00 p.m. departure time, Gail presented the bike show awards and welcomed the crowd. Her emotional reading of the poem It Has Always Been the Soldier was very moving, and tears filled the eyes of more than a few in the crowd. Next was the special ceremony to retire the huge American flag that had been flown with pride for several months at Gail’s. The Marine color guard showed tremendous respect and discipline as they lowered the old flag, folded it with reverence, presented it to Gail, and raised the new flag.

As the huge group of riders pulled out of the parking lot, they were escorted by officers from several law enforcement agencies. The Army Chinook provided an aerial escort, circling overhead for the first mile of the ride. Immediately behind the escort bikes was a retired Thiells, New York, fire engine. Then came the military vehicles and thousands of motorcycles led by Gail and Gale. The procession stretched out over several miles as it made its way from Gail’s to Fuel American Made Bar and Grill in the Rosanna Square Shopping Center in Overland Park, Kansas. Rain had been threatening throughout the day, and it arrived about the same time as the riders reached their destination. Fortunately, the shower was light and didn’t last long.

On that horrible September day in 2001, we Americans united in the pledge that we would never forget the events of that day. We must keep that promise, and we must always be on our guard, ready to oppose any adversary to protect and preserve the American way of life for future generations.
